I grabbed this one with hope in my heart but doubt nagging me in the back of my mind. The books description seemed to promise too much. However, this story surpassed both my demands and hopes. From the large cast of fully-fleshed-out characters, multiple vivid settings and plural plot lines running, it is obvious that this skilled author has taken great care and forethought in the creation of this book (series).
I can now say that I am hooked into the plot and characters. I really want to know where this series will end up.
When I reached the ending last night, I wanted to cry.. why? because this series was originally written in German and this book is the only one that has been translated to English! :'(
So do I recommend this book? Heck Yeah!
Here are some tips for future readers:
Go to the back of the book and look for the list of characters, it will make their introduction easier on you.
Check out the authors Facebook page, she has photos of the characters with additional back-stories.
Finally, when you reach the end of this book and you too want to cry because their are no more translated to English, message me, we can commiserate together. :-)

Duocarns The Arrival Pat McCraw Norbert Nagy 9781500845896 Books Reviews
I have been reading fantasy stories for the last 30 years, but very few get this much appeal.
After reading the very first chapter I was totally hooked. I just could not put the book down till I'd finished.
What got me was the way it's set in Canada today. How the Duocarns learn about the new planet.
Everything about this book was perfect, just a shame when I came to the end. Next issue should be translated.
The Duocarns series is a sci-fi/fantasy series originally written in German. This is the first book in the series which has been translated. It is very different to anything I have read before, not strictly mm but not fully mf either, instead it contains both all mixed up with a weird bunch of aliens, and it is very interesting and really enjoyable.
It took me some time to get into the story but once I became familiar with the names of the aliens and their landing on Earth I began to enjoy it.
The story follows two groups of aliens who crash land onto earth. The first group of aliens - the Bacanis who crash in Vancouver, are the baddies, regarded as predators by the Duocarns warriors who hunt them.
They are a bit like alien vampires and unfortunately they find that they quite like the taste of humanity.
The Duocarns are the goodies. They had been hunting the Bacanis and followed them as they crashed to Earth. The Duocarns land in Calgary and although they suspect that the Bacanis are on earth they don't know where but they know they must eventually hunt and eliminate them.
So both groups are stranded on Earth, the brave hunters and the evil hunted, and that is where the adventure begins. All of them have to find clothing, food and transport, and a way to survive on Earth. They also have to come to terms with the fact that unlike ET they can never go home. (
Ans so they start to adapt finding that Earth is different. Here they have affinity with humans and with nature and animals, and as the Bacanis soon find out they have the power to do great harm or great good. This is a sci - fi adventure story with mf and mm romance and it was a really good read.
My favourite parts of the story are the relationships. The first part of the book focuses on the mf relationship between Aiden and Solutosan. It was nicely done, with a solid female character who kept her wits about her and a noble alien who gradually responds to love.
There is also the relationship between Chrom and the she wolf. Chrom is a good Bacani and is one of the Duocarns. He has a form a bit like a wolf. He isn't human but has an animal and semi-human form. He has a relationship with the wolf when in his wolf form which results in a pup/weird child alien.
Then there is the mm relationship with David and Tervenarius. These two hit it off because they are both very weird. Tervenarius being Duocarns has to hide his features from humans but David gets to know him and gets to love his golden eyes and pale translucent skin. The two hit it off when they both realise that they share a deep love of plant life, fungus and poison fish.
(Yes. Exactly. The alien weirdo and the human weirdo get together)
The story is unique and good fun. And I appreciate the author for sending me a free copy ) I really enjoyed it and I think other people will enjoy it as well. I can't say that I found it erotic. It is fantasy/sci-fi/adventure and enjoyable, with romance.
It is unique which I appreciated. I liked the way in which the characters were all very different and I liked the way they adapted to their circumstances, of course the Duocarns in a great way causing no harm, and the Bacanis through murder and mayhem.
My only disappointment is that this is the first story in what looks like a really interesting series but the other books are not yet translated (
Boo hoo.
Alas I wait in hope. Or maybe I could take up German language classes?
A really good book which I truly enjoyed.
I loved this book. It was a fun read. Short, kept me glued to the page. Basically all the things that a good book should do. There may have been a few cliché’s but thankfully the one I was hoping wouldn’t be in here wasn’t. So let’s get down to why I loved it so much.
The Novel has a large cast of characters but handles it well. Each character is distinct in characteristics and appearance making it easy to visualise them. And they stay true to form. I only had one character who just seemed to step out of the place she should’ve been in which was disappointing so I’ll just refrain from actually using a character name next to what they do to avoid spoiling anything.
Action right from the start had me intrigued, how the aliens got to earth well it was unfortunate. Something, well… new would’ve been better I didn’t really enjoy that part on either the bad guys or the good guys camp for one reason neither of them, the ones being chased or the ones chasing, seemed stupid enough to just fly into what they flew into. It was too obvious of a plot device and almost ruined a rather intriguing scene. As far as the names go some are easy, Chrom, Pan, Psal, But Xanmeran I always said Zimmerman which is way wrong, but I still can’t wrap my had around this name. Solutoson is just hard to say. Don’t think I’ve ever said it wrong it’s just difficult. Some names just slowed me down because when you say a name wrong you keep at it until you believe you have it right. A pronunciation key might have helped in the beginning of the book. There are other more complicated names. The only other thing about the opening that bugged me was too many devices I had no idea what they were doing. It’s scifi but still there should be some description of what this nob does and that button and, I dunno maybe I”m just stupid. The names and mechanics aside the opening was brilliant.
Character developement, very well. Since I’m not saying who is who no breakdown this review but they definitely did go somewhere, no one remained the same or untouched by their circumstances so as the plot moved so did the characters so they had journeyed within themselves and that’s always good. Characters that have no growth bug me. Granted some became better and some deteriorated but growth is growth. I did have two problems though. One character has this job I’m supposed to feel they care about more than anything and they just sorta give it up for this new fantastical world of money and intrigue. I was hoping to see them do their job more, connect with it more, especially after their awesome intro but none of that transpired. They just sorta fizzled into this new life and left the old one in the dark after talking it up so much. Like their life revolved around it then pft. Nothing, job no more. It was just sorta sad to read about the days they were missing from work and kind of devalued how important I was supposed to believe it was to them.
The one other character bit was there is this person we are supposed to care for. Also another brilliant intro. But they didn’t interact with the characters enough for a bond to be created. If something happened to them, which it did, I was sorta reaching to feel for this character. Connect, but I had to actually use my own connection to this type of person in real life to make it there. It’s the one main character that just wasn’t developed enough so subsequently I was unable to feel enough when it was required I do so. All in all though the characters are great. Loved them.
The romance, funny, steamy, complicated, and a delight to read. This book does what I wish erotica would do sometimes. Actually have a decent plot. Yes we love a steamy passionate love scene. Hell we love hardcore gorilla action too. People in the real world get naked there’s no harm in writing about it, but what about the plot. The cast has steamy sex, now what. This book did well on the ‘now what’ it actually has a plot and isn’t masquerading as a real book that has sex. It IS a real book that has sex in it. And all the relationships are none traditional. That makes for good situations that exist beyond the cliché’s of typical romance.
The plot. The pace went well. Slow to start then race to finish. Without you really noticing that the pace had changed. Very smooth transitioning. The danger was very well set out and both the enemy and the heroes learned how to support themselves and blend in at a believable pace. The last relationship plot device was my fave because it seemed like an obvious nod towards one camp (hero/enemy) but it ended up surprising me in that it completely went over my head it could go either way and I guessed wrong. And I love being fooled so bonus points to the author for that. Maybe she is crafty enough to steer loads of readers down the wrong path and grab them with the twist. The ending i madly love because again I knew exactly what was up and was irritated. However the author managed to win me back with the who and not the what. Again I was way of base and thoroughly enjoyed that.
And, there’s a certain character in the enemy camp that i swear if something happens to them I will refuse to read another book. Okay that’s not true but I really like them, and a certain fungus expert. My two fave characters. A delight to read. The other thing about this book that bugs me just a bit is the lack of female presence, both camps only have one female. And all the people they deal with, except for one person who gets little page time, is also male. I find a lot of books I read lately are like this. They are so it’s a mans world. Like the human man gets taught how to fight but not the human female. What’s with women not being on par with man. If you’ve read any of my reviews you know this bugs me. At least the woman on the bad side is formidable, but it’s not because she herself is formidable, it’s more because her race as a whole is extremely formidable. It sorta really came to a head when the women in business is a bad idea comment floated in. Just why. I guess I’m weird but I’m at that point where I wish authors in general would just stop doing this put the men in their place and amp up the girl power already. More women, more women who can do things, and less of the it’s a mans world kind of feel.
Humor, spot on. I had more than a few chuckles, quite a few actually. And i definitely liked that the men are the sex objects in this book. Very refreshing from the usual female hottie stuff. So done. It had a few of those obvious scifi clichés but there was only one out of them all that bugged me. the sex thing. I know I praised the use of sex in this book, however, it felt very judge dread. People not copulating for fun in the future stuff. Why, in a world where sex is still taboo in some places does the future seem to digress in books so much. No more touching artificial insemination. Just why? It just seems odd to me that this is done enough times for me to notice it’s done. Maybe I”m stupid but in advanced worlds wouldn’t it make more sense to create better contraceptive technology instead of not having sex. If you can regenerate arms surely you can stop men from being able to impregnate females without harming them in any shape or form. I just don’t get it.
Okay so back to the point. I loved reading this book. And when it was over I was actually shocked. said i had 2 percent left. there’s a character breakdown at the end. Needless to say I was wanting more. Much more. Where is part two already so I can read it.
I would recommend this book. It’s funny, action packed, suspenseful with a splash of drama, and it’s a bit steamy too. What more could you ask from a book. All my little teeny issues aside this book still gets four stars out of me. A quick, light fun read with the perfect cliff hanger ending. I cant wait to read more of this stuff. Especially because of the one thing that involves the home planet of the aliens that I’m so not telling. You’ll have to read it and find out just like I did.
I grabbed this one with hope in my heart but doubt nagging me in the back of my mind. The books description seemed to promise too much. However, this story surpassed both my demands and hopes.
