While I haven't finished reading this book yet, I just had to post my initial 2-cents. This novel is just damn good, period. While reminiscent in theme to the movie I-Robot at times, it takes a wonderfully new look at prejudice, computer sentience and human nature through the use of expert storytelling ripe with biting wit and some absolutely unexpectedly shocking "A-HA" moments. I've read some of Emrys' screenplays and wondered what he would bring to a novel. I'm not surprised how good this is. It's hard to get me to cry from a book, by the way, and I was not even 60 pages in before I did. Nearing the half-way mark, I revel in my time after work when I can crawl into a few more chapters. I shall update at the finish line.I need a troll doll. ;)
UPDATE: With my incredibly busy 10 hour days, then coming home to be a family boi, I finally finished this wonderful book. I really adore the cast of characters, first and foremost. It vaguely reminds me of the innocence and quirkiness of the characters from the movie "Million Dollar Hotel." (If you haven't seen it, I recommend it, for a variety of reasons, though it's not an Oscar movie.) I love that this book is intelligent, with luscious bits of commentary and foreshadows, hidden gems of stuff that is later affirmed making the reader feel just a little bit smart. ;)
Frankly, there's so much I could say, and very little time. I appreciate being part of many discriminated classes of people (I'm a female, genderqueer, lesbian, with a disability, who is non-christian, of lower socio-economic status, but very well educated) and finding such vast mirrors to my experiences through the lenses of many others.
My favorite aspect of this book, however? One word: Daemons.
Feast, and look forward to another up and coming book oft mentioned in this one. Clever and satisfying was this read.

An intriguing story that is hard to put down. The characters are oddly relatable. The book takes place in Los Angeles, so it is fun to read about landmarks that Angelenos would recognize.
A wonderfully written book that is both entertaining and intellectually stimulating. The author has masterfully created an environment for societal reflection explored by the light-hearted, charming, playful protagonist, Lucy. Her deep desire to be unique is something we can all resonate with and drives the story. I can only recommend you read it!
I was given this book, so I had more trepidation than I did expectation when I first started to read it. I was delighted by the first few pages, and from then on, couldn't put it down. The author's writing is rich and satisfying, and the story is interesting, quirky and intelligent. The characters capture your imagination immediately, and then slowly capture your heart. What a great read. Thank you!
I picked up this book on the advise of a friend, who's uncle is the author. Simply put, I loved it! Fun and thought provoking; it will keep you up late at night, unwilling to put it down for even just a couple of hours. For me, an avid epic fantasy reader (elves, swords,....you know the type), finding books outside of my genre that I really really enjoy are few in number and I am happy to include this as one. I love Lucy and I can't wait to see what she does next!
It's easy to get caught up in the lives of others (both real and fictional), as it is to relate and identify with circumstances. Emrys' "Scarecrows" is a joy to read and emphasizes the consequences of our actions and feelings toward others. The story of the Humes is one we can all appreciate. Their quest for independence and freedom make us realize we still have so much to do as their human counterparts. What a great lesson in tolerance and humanity! I can't wait to see what happens next in Lucy's (and her friends) world.
Very interesting story!
I don't get much time to read for pleasure. So, when this book was recommended to me, I bought it with the intent to but, disbelief that I would be able to finish it. To my delight, by the third chapter I found everything else less important than getting to know better the endearing characters that Jonathan Emrys has created in this very compelling, witty and thoughtful book on artificial sentient life forms. The idea of artificial sentience is not new. But, this talented author's creative and humorous style adds a unique and engaging perspective replete with convincing details. I already miss Lucy and can't wait for the next volume. I'm thinking that the plethora of wildlife in Emrys' back yard might include a squirrel.
